Social Security

International students holding F-1 or J-1 status are eligible to apply for a social security number for purposes of employment only. This means that students must show the Social Security Administration documentation that they have on-campus employment (unless they have been authorized for other off-campus employment).

To apply for a social security number, you will need to prepare all application materials (see below) and go to the Social Security Office. For local transportation options, see our transportation page (link to I-Place local transportation page).

On Campus Employment

F-1 or J-1 students with an on-campus job (or an offer of an on-campus job) need:

  • A letter from your employer (see the sample letter below)
  • A letter from your International Student Advisor (you will need to give your International Student Advisor a copy of the employer letter so that they can prepare a letter authorizing you for on-campus employment)
  • Completed Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5 below)
  • Valid passport
  • Current I-94 Information
  • Current I-20 or DS-2019 (the Pomona Social Security Office requires F-1 students present a recently issued I-20)

Curricular Practical Training

If you are an F-1 student and have been approved for Curricular Practical Training (CPT), and you do not already have a social security number, you need to bring the following to the Social Security Administration:

  • Completed Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5 below)
  • Valid passport
  • Current I-94 Information
  • Current I-20 with CPT approval

Optional Practical Training or Employment Authorization for Severe Economic Hardship

If you are an F-1 student and have received your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) for Optional Practical Training or for Severe Economic Hardship, you need to bring the following to the Social Security Administration:

  • Completed Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5 below)
  • Valid passport
  • Current I-94 Information
  • Current I-20
  • Your EAD

Academic Training for J-1 Students

If you are a J-1 student and have been approved for Academic Training, and you do not already have a social security number, you need to bring the following to the Social Security Administration:

  • A letter from your Responsible Officer authorizing you for Academic Training
  • Completed Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5 below)
  • Valid passport
  • Current I-94 Information
  • Current DS-2019
