New International Student and Scholar Orientation (NISSO)

New International Student and Scholar Orientation, also known as “NISSO”, is a 2.5-day orientation program designed for incoming students or scholars who have lived outside of the U.S. for at least some part of their lives.

NISSO attendees will spend two and a half days with other international students from their home campus and students from three of the other Claremont Colleges.

NISSO attendance is required for students and scholars who will be studying in the US on a F or J student or scholar visa at the following campuses:

  • Claremont McKenna College
  • Pitzer College
  • Pomona College
  • Scripps College

NISSO may also be beneficial for new students or scholars that hold U.S. citizenship/ permanent residency and have spent the majority of their lives outside of the US. These individuals (who may also identify as international) are welcome and encouraged to attend NISSO.


  • Transportation from the airport to campus (*registration required)
  • Opportunity to settle into life on campus early
  • Information and guidance tailored to an international perspective
  • Peer-to-peer support from current international students
  • Advice from future professors and administrators
  • Interaction with the larger international community at The Claremont Colleges


Please note that due to COVID-19 and the uncertainty of Fall 2020, details below are tentative and may change during the summer. Should the dates or format of NISSO change, International Place will send an update to all incoming students and scholars via email.

Thursday, August 20 All expected to arrive on campus & check in at International Place by 6:00 PM.

Airport pickup service offered from LAX/ONT to campus between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

Friday, August 21 NISSO Program
Saturday, August 22 NISSO Program

Pitzer College students transition to Pitzer New Student Orientation in the afternoon.

Sunday, August 23 Claremont McKenna College and Pomona College students transition to CMC Orientation and Pomona Orientation Week.

Scripps College students transition to Scripps New Student Programs and Orientation.

The current deadline to register for NISSO is Friday, July 10.

Complimentary Airport Pickup Service

International Place offers an optional, complimentary transportation from Los Angeles (LAX) and Ontario (ONT) international airports to Claremont for new students or scholars who will be attending NISSO.

Transportation should be requested in advance via the Fall 2020 NISSO Registration Form. Individuals are able to request transportation ahead of time and will be asked to submit their travel itineraries closer to the scheduled arrival date.

Residence Hall Move-In for Undergraduate Students

International students and scholars are given permission to move into their campus housing assignments early for NISSO on Thursday, August 20. Individuals who attend NISSO are expected stay on-campus throughout the NISSO program.

New International Student Move-In and Check-In will occur between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM on Thursday, August 20.

International Place will coordinate early move-in with Housing & Residential Life for NISSO participants attending:

  • Claremont McKenna College
  • Pitzer College
  • Pomona College
  • Scripps College


International recognizes that many students and scholars will arrive on campus with family, and that orientation is a special time for family members as well.
